It’s a common misconception that wool is only for winter. I wear my merino socks all year long. Imagine a sweltering summer day: you’re cycling to the office and consider going barefoot because of the heat. But once you arrive, the AC is blasting cold air directly onto your feet.
That is when my socks do their best work:

Over het welzijn van schapen : 2 eerlijke overwegingen

Ik hou van dieren en heb dan ook veel aandacht voor hun welzijn. Ook schapenhouders houden veel van hun dieren, helaas zijn er ook een aantal individuen die schandalige praktijken durven toepassen! 

  1. Een schaap scheren is een must: voor sommige mensen is dit al een brug te ver. Onzin natuurlijk en puur gebaseerd op onwetendheid want een gedomesticeerd schaap (zoals het merino schaap) verliest zijn vacht niet vanzelf. Er zijn in onze contreien een aantal rassen die ruien, maar die wol kan je best laten liggen (figuurlijk bedoeld, want wol is ondermeer ideaal als isolatie- en brandwerend middel). Maar dus, laat een gedomesticeerd schaap ongeschoren rondlopen en het dier sterft aan infecties veroorzaakt door parasieten. Zelfs al zou je schapen bijhouden als knuffeldier dan nog moet je hun scheren om huidziekten te voorkomen. 
  2. Mulesing vrije wol: nooit ofte nimmer zou ik willen garen afnemen van een spinner die niet met mulesing vrije wol werkt. Mulesing is een wrede praktijk waarbij men de huid aan de kont van het schap wegsnijdt. Waarom? Om myiasis te voorkomen. Dit is een huidmadenziekte die het meest voorkomt op de plek rond de staart. Oorzaak zijn de vleesvliegen die eitjes op de vacht droppen en die eitjes vreten zich een weg in de huid. Ze kweken het liefst in een vochtige omgeving, en die plek rond de staart en de aars is zowat de meest natte plek aan een schaap.
    Om de vliegen voor te zijn kan men best de schapen scheren in het voorjaar, nog voor de omgevingstemperatuur boven de tien graden komt. Op die manier droogt de huid en is ze niet langer geschikt voor larven. Regelmatig scheren voorkomt dan problemen. Maar dit vraagt dus werk en tijd en dus geld. Wat men vaak doet ter preventie is de staart van een lam inkorten, gewoonlijk onder verdoving. Maar in Australië gaan boeren nog een stap verder dan knippen: zij snijden een heel stuk huid rondom het achterwerk weg, meestal zonder verdoving of nazorg. Dit bedoelt men met mulesing. De barbaarse techniek werd bedacht door de Australische schapenherder John Mules.
    De wol voor onze merino sokken is afkomstig van schapen uit Zuid-Afrika waar deze praktijk ten strengste is verboden. Mijn spinner Igea biedt de garantie dat zijn wol mulesing vrij is.
